Rougemont's 2011 referendum to incorporate as a town failed by just 10 votes, and the community has remained a rural, unincorporated place of about 1,000 residents straddling the Durham-Person county line. That rural character means larger lots and more tree cover than an incorporated Durham suburb, which generally works in favor of a bigger deck footprint.
